Casino Industry Holds Its Breath
The online casino industry and millions of online gambling lovers are waiting
with bated breath as the US Senators decide their fate this week.
It may be recalled that members of the US federal government had proposed severe anti-gambling bills in July this year. Several senators complain that online gambling causes addiction and is a loss to the people’s wealth.
If the government has its way, then US banks and credit card companies will stop their payments to online casinos. This would certainly mark the death of online gambling in US. The House of Representatives is already ion favor of the new anti-gambling law.
Critics of online gambling say that online gambling invites underage gambling. They call it a stepping-stone to addiction and health failures. Online gambling is unregulated, so the critics fear that gambling revenues are simply fuelling offshore companies. They see this as a loss to the nation’s economy.
On the other hand, the casino industry is hoping that the anti-gambling laws are rejected as they are damaging to their existence. They reason that there is no difference in gambling at real casinos and gambling on the internet. Playing poker at a casino in Las Vegas is the same as playing it on any online casino site. The risks and responsibilities are the same in both the mediums. Rules that apply in real casinos also apply in internet gambling.
There are more than 2300 online casino sites on the internet. Any decision of the federal government will adversely affect their business and their future.
