Nonagenarian wins mega-jackpot for second time
92 year-old Ohio native Elmer Sherwin, who had won the $4.6 million Megabucks jackpot at the Mirage in 1989, pulled off a near-impossible repeat recently by winning another Megabucks jackpot, this time for $21.1 million. Sherman, who served as an airman in the US army in World War II, is said to be the only person in history to have won the jackpot for a second time. The odds of winning a Megabucks jackpot once are less than one in 10 million.
In a statement released by Megabucks manufacturer IGT, Mr. Sherwin quipped: "I'm glad I finally hit; I've been trying to do it again. I want to see the looks on their [his family's] faces when they hear,'
Sherwin lives in Northwest Las Vegas with his son and daughter-in-law, and is described by relatives and close friends as something of a "provident spender", who only recently allowed himself the indulgence of a fancy car. Finally, in what is hopefully more of Elmer's unique sense of humor, he says he has plans to win for a third time.
